Nice usefull post. I usually like recent commits if Im gonna use a plugin or whatever too.. but maybe one doesn’t have to be so anal about it in every case, only in 98% :)

You have a good point. I knew I was conflating ‘stable’ and ‘defunct’, but I figured that that anything that wasn’t even keeping up with new Rails releases likely also had some unfixed bugs.

I do really like the look and feel of Beast (and its derivatives).

I wouldn’t be quite so quick to dismiss the ‘no recent commits’ forum software.

I run a low-volume support forum on Beast (not even Altered, Savage, or Ultimate), and it’s been rock-solid for me for coming up on 2 years now. I probably pulled changes into it twice, at most, over that period.

No recent commits doesn’t always mean defunct. Sometimes, scarily enough, it means done.

(It’s also remarkably nice, not feeling the upgrade pressure.)

Still, good luck in whatever you do choose. I’d be interested to hear how the issues with opinionated-forum work out.
