[...] After some searching I found this site. I followed the instructions: I downloaded the iscan RPMs and converted them to DEB with alien. After installing the DEBs the scanner works! I had to remove libsane-extras though. That conflicts with the generated DEB files. [...]

I created a usb group for my devices so that I didn't have to be 'root'. This is what I did on Dapper.

1) sudo addgroup --system usb

2) Add your user to the usb group.

3) Edit /etc/udev/rules.d/40-permissions.rules

Here is the original line:
SUBSYSTEM=="usb_device",      MODE="0664"

Here is the updated line:
SUBSYSTEM=="usb_device", MODE="0664", GROUP="usb"

You must add the line 'epkowa' to /etc/sane.d/dll.conf

Works for me, but I must do
$ sudo iscan

in order to get it to work.

I gave the link I did because it was the direct link to the files -- I must've had some kind of session set up from filling in the form. I've corrected the link, thanks.

I didn't have any of the later problems you mention, it pretty much just worked for me.

from:

http://www.avasys.jp/cgi-bin/lx/bbs/en/scanner-bbs/hyperbbs.cgi?mode=view;Code=320

1) add an
epkowa
entry to dll.conf

2) fiddling around with epkowa.conf to register the device

the situation is the following:

Device IS listed when i run sane-find-scanner
(found USB scanner (vendor=0x04b8 [EPSON], product=0x012d [EPSON Scanner]) at libusb:001:002)

now the device is recognised but still not possible to scan...

before you should install alien:

"sudo apt-get install alien"

then the link to the iscan packages are broken, this one seems oki:

http://www.avasys.jp/english/linux_e/dl_scan.html

I choose "erpson v100 photo" and debian package, then downloaded iscan-2.3.0-1.c2.i386.rpm iscan-plugin-gt-s600-2.0.0-1.c2.i386.rpm

then the following commands were not working

"sudo apt-get install iscan_2.3.0-1_i386.deb"
"sudo apt-get install iscan-plugin-gt-s600_2.0.0-2_i386.deb"

I had to do:

"dpkg -i iscan_2.3.0-1_i386.deb"
"dpkg -i iscan-plugin-gt-s600_2.0.0-2_i386.deb"

but at the end "sane-find-scanner" find "found USB scanner (vendor=0x04b8 [EPSON], product=0x012d [EPSON Scanner]) at libusb:005:004"

...and scanimage scanimage: no SANE devices found...

So it is the same as before the installation
